The Gabba – AFL Grand Final’s night in shining armour

24/10/2020

After an epic season, history has been made at The Gabba as a crowd of nearly 30,000 people watched the Richmond Tigers take down the Geelong Cats.

The event is the first ever night time Grand Final event, and only the second to ever be held outside the MCG.
The Gabba General Manager Mark Zundans said the event had been a roaring success.

“Tonight's match between Richmond and Geelong is one of those once-in-a-lifetime sporting events that won’t be forgotten,” Mr Zundans said.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make the event a success and particularly to all the fans who remained vigilant with following COVID safe practices while at the stadium,” he said.

“It was a fantastic end to a jam-packed season, with the Gabba hosting 35 games this season – the equivalent of three years’ worth of games, with every AFL team but Hawthorn playing at the venue.”

Stadiums Queensland Chief Executive Todd Harris said the Grand Final was an encouraging step toward COVID normality.

“It was wonderful for The Gabba to be involved in such a historic and iconic occasion, and I expect it has had a ripple effect on the local community and AFL fans nation-wide,” Mr Harris said.

“2020 has been a rough year for many, and the major events and sporting industries have been hit particularly hard, so it is wonderful to see our stadiums alive with the cheers of fans once more,” he said.

“As an organisation that supports more than 3,000 full-time equivalent jobs as well as many other industries, it’s encouraging that we’ve been able to work with Queensland Health find appropriate measures to help keep our games going and our fans entertained.”
